It’s been more than two weeks now since I arrived here at Purdue. The first day that was 19th august, I was all pumped with anxiety. I was so eager to meet new people and make good friends. The same day I met plenty of people from India. I got in touch with thousands, remembered some but chose a few! Everything went well! That day I had also checked in into my room at Shreve. Of course I was very much excited to meet my roomie. By the way guys, my roommate is Roshini. The best part about us is that we both have same class schedules.
Anyways, coming back to the topic I must say that on my first day at Purdue I felt I could easily acclimatize with this new environment (which I still think I can). The next day and even further I started to feel home sick. I am still home sick though. I miss my home and my family. I’m pretty sure that even you guys might be yearning to be with your family. Don’t you?
I am 24 Hours away from my place, my home country India. I’m overwhelmed with this nostalgic feeling now. This reminds me of an interesting or funny or may be a serious incident which happened to me just recently. Just before our first weekend, I fell sick. Sick as in suffering with high fever, cold, cough and everything related to viral fever. I know viral fever isn’t a big deal, but trust me, the Firemen (sitting opposite Shreve Hall) were called upon to ride me to the hospital. I know this was something serious, but I really think it was funny too. I had never experienced this before.
Also other than the home sickness, I also long for my mom’s handmade food. I love spicy food and unfortunately that isn’t available at the dining courts here. I wanted to be an adventurous eater in my first week of college but unfortunately I couldn’t be one because I’m a vegetarian. For the last two weeks I’m living on a diet of salads and have also lost 4kgs lol.
Everything has been moving smoothly till now. I have always been a social freak and so didn’t face any difficulty in choosing some admirable, friendly and appropriate friends like Karlyn, Natlee, Yerke, karan, Roshini, Amon, Tina and many more.
It will of course take me time to get used to the new food now.Somebody please improve the cuisine at the dining courts and help me overcome this home-sickness!!!
Hi Dharna,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you've had a memorable first week in college! I just wanted to let you know that I'm also a vegetarian and there are some great options for vegetarian food here. Let me know if you'd like some suggestions:)
yea!Had an extraordinary weekend. Please do suggest me some good restaurants offering tempting vegetarian food. I'm so sick of having salads and potato chips everyday.:p

Hey roommate, it's nice to know you've made good friends other than me. I somewhat know what you are feeling and I'll try my best to make you feel home here, if I can. Things are pretty hard here, but we have to find our way and go on! And the food is pretty good here, I feel like I'm going to get freshman 15 soon :)
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling kind of homesick too. I don't miss being home (actually I'm glad to be away!) but I really miss my best friend. My best friend and I were inseperable through high school and went on a trip together to Spain over this past summer. We went to different colleges which really sucks. Last night, I was feeling really overwhelmed and I spontaneously burst into tears and was like "I miss Brenna!" (my best friend). I'm sure that was very awkward for everyone around me. lol. If you need anything, I'm here for you, cuz I'm going through the same thing. Btw Windsow has awesome vegetarian food (that's their specialty).
ReplyDeleteYea, being away from home is pretty tough, but I always try and think of why I’m here and what opportunities I’m enjoying being here instead of wherever else I might be.
ReplyDeleteWell, I know that Earheart has a 'mongolian barbecue-style' counter where you can fill a bowl with whatever vegetables you like to be fried up and cooked with rice or noodles, which is SOOOOOOO good! Just be careful with the lines, and you also have the 'do it yourself' pasta/pizza counter where you can load up a bowl (of pasta) or pizza crust with whatever your heart so desires - definately recommend those.

If you like Middle eastern food, you may want to try The Blue Nile. Its got an entire menu for vegetarians, and its not too expensive.
ReplyDeleteyea rosh. I'm so glad that I have you as my roommate. life's a struggle everywhere and i'm trying my best to overcome the hurdles.
ReplyDeleteBtw, dude are you serious you'll be freshmen 15 now! you love it that much lol. rather take my meal swipes too :p
awww! And I'm there for you too. I miss home badly :(
ReplyDeleteANYWAYS! you seriously went to Spain. That's so awesome. I wanna go there too. That place is heaven.
umm...yea windsor has decent food though. I suaaly go there. someday may be we both can go to the Indian food restaurant in the downtown ;)
Thanks a lot for the options guys. And yea, I'll surely check out the 'mongolian barbecue-style' counter at Erhart. :)
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of The Blue Nile. I'll surely have dinner there this weekend. :D
