What I thought a learning community was?

Months back while going through the mypurdue account checklist, I came across a link saying LEARNING COMMUNITY. Seriously, I never knew what exactly did this mean. I thought it was an organisation working on spreading knowledge about different cultures. I just randomly applied those which had appealing names and didn't require an essay lol. Within the next few days I received a mail which confirmed my enrollment in a learning community. Till that time I din't even bother find more about it.

My first engr 103 class came up as a great surprise to me. Nothing was similar to what I thought it would be. I expected professors to talk about multifarious cultures. I already had plans of sleeping in class :p
But instead the first day I was given an assignment in hand along with a homework. wow!

Apart from the homeworks, I must say that I now enjoy attending this class. This course is enriching my mind and is giving me a new outlook towards engineering!

  1. I know exactly what you mean; I did the exact same thing. In the middle of the summer I had no idea what I still needed to do to be able to come here to Purdue. So what I did was go through the entire check list on the myPurdue account. When I got to the learning community page I looked at all of the names, not having any idea what the learning communities were actually for. So I just applied to the ones that sounded like they interested me the most, I did not know that it would be this kind of a decision, and I had no idea what I was getting into. But so far it has been pretty good so I don’t really mind.

  2. haha! right. I chose those communities which required no essays. :p
Even I'm enjoying this class now. But the fact that scares me is that we are still to write a 7000 words paper!
wow! this has been haunting me since long now.

  3. The idea of a learning community was a new concept to me too! I had never heard of it until I had a friend who told me it was something really good to be a part of. I really did not even know what would come with the learning community and I did not even think about what classes I would have to take. I just filled out the applications for ones that sounded good and applied to me and sent it in. I found out I got in and was happy when I got the email. The first day of class was interesting. It sounds cheesy, but it really did open my eyes. I never really realized other countries have different techniques of engineering. I guess I just assumed they were all the same. I really am enjoying the class too and have learned so much so far. Today, in class, the speaker from Australia was super interesting and I learned so many things. I have always found global studies so interesting and have wanted to study abroad. This is the first step in doing so and I cannot wait to be studying around the world someday quite soon! PS I think that we have to write 7000 words total over the semester, not just in one paper. I think. (Jayne)
