This week started for me not on Monday, but three days earlier. The weekend was the same as weekday. I was studying till 4 am on Friday in Hicks cafĂ© trying to find two sources to my Lit Review. At same time I was reading the article about mangonels and trebuchets which seemed quite long and hard to me. Yet they were not the only reason why I stayed at Hicks till 4 am. A utility company turned off electricity in our apartment due to late payment. The apartment became dark and cold. We (me and roommates) could not cook and eat, use internet, have a shower… As my roommate noticed “ Welcome to Stone Age”.
After a long consideration I chose a book “Wind energy comes of age”, which I was trying to find for two hours in Potter library stacks. Next two days I spent most of time on this book. Besides it, there were MEA, library project and physics exam on Tuesday, in which I was absolutely sure that I would get perfect score. This confidence was ruined next day when I learned that I got 50/70 in first part of the exam. That almost destroyed my “A+” plan for this class. (
Yesterday I recalled how I adore Fridays. I had a euphoria because the utility company gave back electricity to our apartment; it became warm, I could again enjoy my TV Shows and eat at home. Also, yesterday I went to play soccer the first time in this month. Now I am waiting for my friend’s car, then we will go to Chicago. To Evanescence concert ! )))
I haven't stayed in the library until midnight, because I think it's dangerous to walk on the dark and quiet street alone. But I couldn't agree more that library is a perfect place for studying. I can focus on my work and work efficiently. I believe that it must be a terrible experience when the utility company turned off electricity in the apartment. I couldn't image the weekends' nights without internet and delicious food cooked by ourselves. Your experience remained me of my high school. I lived in the dorm and the dormitory administrator would turn off the lights on 10 p.m. After 10p.m the whole dorm is dark and the outlets have no power. If the students have some homework left, they need to use the flashlight. At that time, we named 10p.m as "Stone Age". It's good for you to find a interesting book and can stay in the library for the whole night. I think all students major in engineering are busy with the MEA and library project. They take tons of time and my team always spends almost 2 hours on them. I hope we can learn something from this class and good luck for your second physics exam!(ENGL 106)
ReplyDeleteI know what you felt when you were cut off of your electric connection. I'm sure you must have felt quite annoyed and more importantly cold.
ReplyDeleteBut in some countries like Cambodia and India electric cuts are common everyday occurrences. People have to live in these kinds of situation every day.
During a summer while I was India, the electricity was cut because apparently there wasn't enough of water flow at the nearby hydro electric dam. As in your situation, everything electric was cut off: TV, internet, Computer, etc. I got very bored. But the most importantly our brand-new fridge was not working. On top of that it was one of those, at the time, High tech fridge that didn’t produce any frost. As a result, all our supplies got stale very quickly and we were out of food in the middle of the countryside, far from any stores.
This example and also your situation shows how dependant we are on technology these days. I wonder what would happen if, right now, all of the US lost its power grid?
