You Don't Know What You Have Until It's Gone

This past weekend I went to my hometown of Louisville, KY. I had a great time and did NOT want to come back. It was so refreshing to eat at all my favorite places, go to my favorite stores, and see my friends (especially my best friend). I also went to my grandmas’ house and visited her and my aunt. I had a birthday party with my family (which I normally HATE) that I actually loved. It was amazing to sleep in my own bed and be in such a “large” space (my house, even though it’s small, seems like a mansion compared to my apartment!). My mom decorated my room, cooked my favorite food, and took me shopping. It was amazing to take a break from all the stress that I experience at Purdue. I also got god-awfully sick, but I didn’t mind that much because I’d rather be sick at home than here at school. It was nice to have my mom there when I was throwing up because she would make me soup and ginger ale while I lay in bed. When I was feeling better, I got to go to the mall and to TJ Maxx (which is 5349574682 times better than the one here…no offense) and I feasted on the best barbecue in the world. I got to also got to spend some quality time cuddling with my dog (who, by the way, has been uber depressed since I left home. Apparently he just lays in my room all day…). It was so hard to leave home and come back to school. My city is the best in the world…It’s small enough that you know almost everyone (or you know somebody who knows somebody), but it’s big enough that you’re not stuck in the middle of nowhere with the only transportation being a tractor. I literally have everything I need within a 5 minute drive from my house (that includes 5 different Targets, not like here where there is one Target within a 75 mile radius). It has all the benefits of a big city with a small-hometown feel of being acquainted with everyone. Also, Louisville is where the Southern and Northern parts of the country meet, so it’s very hospitable and embraces the best of both worlds. Sometimes I wish I didn’t leave, but my education is worth it.

  1. yeah, I wish I could be able to eat my mom's food again or a crispy masala dosa (great South Indian breakfast dish. If you happen to go to Southern India, you have to try it).
The fall break couldn't have come at any better time. Like you, I also needed the break.
You got lucky when you got sick during the fall break. Even if it might have made you miss out on completely enjoying your vacation, I have to agree that getting sick when school is in session would have been a pain. You would have to go through the whole process of missing class, filling out absence reports, making up for class, and homework... right after you get better. That would really be rough. I’m usually the sickly one in the family so I have got some experience getting sick and missing class. But so far, despite the weather and apart for an occasional cold, I haven’t got seriously sick. Anyway, I hope you had a great Fall Break.

  2. Being an international student, I never had the opportunity to go back home every weekend or on any one of those little breaks that we get throughout the year. Hence I was always forced to think of why the local students here at Purdue feel the constant need to visit home. I got the fact that they miss their family and friends back home but isn’t going back home on every weekend going a little over board? This weekend, things went about a little differently for me. A very close friend of mine here at Purdue planned to go home for the weekend because it was exam week and she thought that she would get a lot of work done back home. I decided to join her because (A) Even I needed to get a lot of work done and I felt that being away from the temptations that college offers would help. And (B) I wanted to unlock the code and see what keeps pulling the college kids towards home. Needless to say, both tasks were achieved. Not only did I finish all my assignments for the week and get a kick-start on math, I also figured out why students want to go back home for the weekend. Visiting my friends’ house made me realize how much I miss home! I saw my parents in my friends’ parents. My meals were better, my showers were perfect and lastly but definitely not the least, I actually had a good night’s sleep!

  3. Louisville is in quite a pretty area of the country, like you said- situated perfectly between the north and south. Its much hillier than up here and the roads are lined with woods driving down that way. So my question is- how are the leaves? I just drove straight east over break and the fall colored leaves were amazing!

  4. The leaves are gorgeous! They're so brightly colored, and like you said, Kentucky is very hilly, so when I drive along, I see hills covered with different fall colors. Also, the fall weather there is amazing. Its like here, but a little bit warmer. It's refreshingly cool but not cold enough to wear a coat like I did today. It's more like "sweater weather". Hahha, oh what am I going to do for winter? I also love fall in KY because it lasts until November. I heard we get snow here in late October sometimes. Ahhhhh!!!!! I'm scared of what winter here will bring. I'm considering buying a sleeping bag, cutting a hole in the top for my head, and just wearing that around everywhere. lol :)
