This article was really interesting. I really like how many different aspects of the problem it helped to define and explain. I can personally relate to this article because of how people judge me. Like the article said, if you’re tall, people often ask you if you play sports. I get asked that question all the time. Most commonly, I’m asked if I play volleyball or basketball. Another common way in which people see me is as a blonde sorority girl. Which, in fact, by coining “blonde sorority girl”, I’m alluding to another stereotype. It’s interesting to see how stereotypes and blindspots affect how we think and experience things. It is also interesting to note that these stereotypes can either allow or prevent people from succeeding. I’ve seen this everywhere, but especially in school. As much as I don’t want to admit it, I can tell that almost all my teachers have judged their students and given grades which have been affected by those judgments. I’ve also seen it in the workplace. This is something that all of us could definitely work on.

Our Teachers Can Prevent Us From Success

Yeah I totally agree with you here. I believe along as there are humans living, there will always be stereotypes. I do wish that it can all go away, but at the same time I hardly doubt it will. I've experienced a lot also, but I learned to just ignore it because if the person actually cared they would want to get to actually know me. If they keep talking, let me talk. (engr 103)
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I really like the title of your article, because it was different so it caught my eye. I think everyone has those stereotypes. I don’t have the tall thing, I used to be really short (not that short though) and everyone would say “you are so short” and I was like ok, because how do you respond to that. Definitely, sorority girl is one that is going to play more role, especially when I go home everyone knows I am in a sorority. I do not regret it at all, because it was one of the best things I have done. My sorority helps me relax and my new big as of Thursday is Kaila Butcher. She is incredible. Kaila and Haley Mummert (another girl in our house) are a part of SOC, which is the 7 students who plan BGR (I know…it’s awesome). They girls in my house have done a lot of amazing things. They way it turned out there just happened to be a lot of blondes in my pledge class, which does not help the stereotype. In reality, all of the girls are absolutely precious and I love them! The Greek community is for some people, and I think it is important that others don’t judge us for a choice we made, when I don’t judge them for not going Greek. I don’t let it annoy me, it is just the fact they judge something that means so much to me. (engr103)
